Mauricio Pochettino confrims veteran defender has suffered another groin injury

Thiago Silva’s tenure at Chelsea could be over, as Mauricio Pochettino revealed the defender exited the match against Aston Villa due to a groin injury.

With his contract set to expire and no official announcement from Silva or the club, it’s speculated that the 39-year-old may have played his final game for Chelsea.

Silva’s future at Chelsea hangs in the balance, as he may have just played his final game for the club.

Pochettino disclosed that Silva experienced groin pain, reminiscent of an injury he sustained earlier in the season against Crystal Palace, which sidelined him for three matches, including the Carabao Cup final.

Pochettino informed reporters, “We need to assess him after tomorrow. It is a pain in his groin, which was similar to [Crystal] Palace.” With just five games remaining this season, there’s speculation whether the seasoned defender has concluded his tenure with the club. Silva, who joined Chelsea from PSG on a free transfer in 2020, has amassed 151 appearances and scored nine goals for the team. He played a pivotal role in securing Chelsea’s second Champions League title under Thomas Tuchel in 2021, defeating Manchester City 1-0 in Porto.

Chelsea has begun seeking a replacement, reportedly expressing interest in RB Leipzig’s Castello Lukeba.

However, Lukeba isn’t the sole target, as Sporting Lisbon’s Ousmane Diomande is also on their radar. It seems Silva might not be the only center-back departing Stamford Bridge this summer, as Trevoh Chalobah is also anticipated to be sold.
