Newcastle dealt major blow with Joe Willock ruled out for remainder of the season

Newcastle has suffered a significant setback as midfielder Joe Willock is sidelined for the remainder of the season due to a persistent Achilles issue, as reported by Mail Sport.

Despite his return in February, the 24-year-old has continued to experience discomfort, prompting the decision to rest him for the Magpies’ final six matches.

Since joining Newcastle from Arsenal in 2021, Willock has been plagued by this problem, leading to a consultation with a specialist.

While he could potentially continue playing, the focus now is on allowing him to recuperate and undergo strength training to ensure his readiness for the upcoming preseason, as outlined by Mail Sport.

Manager Eddie Howe aims for Willock to be completely free from the issue, considering his performances have not met his usual standards.

Thus, it’s deemed the best course of action to conclude his season prematurely.

Willock’s injury has restricted him to only nine starts and five substitute appearances this season, during which he has scored two goals.

His absence has been keenly felt in Newcastle’s midfield, with Howe reportedly appreciating his energy and proficiency in carrying the ball.

Despite the setback with Willock, there’s a glimmer of hope for Howe as Elliot Anderson has regained fitness, offering another midfield option.

Additionally, there’s optimism that Joelinton will make an appearance before the season’s end. Willock, who has made 102 appearances for Newcastle, scoring 15 goals and providing six assists, leaves a notable void.
